The Naming of Indian Trail Park: Embracing Heritage and Community

In 1989, Carol Knight with the Greater Union Grove Area Chamber of Commerce initiated a contest that invited residents to propose fitting names for three parks within the charming confines of the Village of Union Grove. One of these parks would soon be known as Indian Trail Park. Mary Nichols chose this name to honor the historical significance of the park’s location, situated near a once-prominent Indian trail traversed by Native American tribes in the early 19th century.

Indian Trail Park’s serene, wooded area continues to remind us that these parts once echoed with the footsteps of earlier inhabitants.

In 2024, community efforts revitalized Indian Trail Park, which included the installation of a new park sign. A map showcasing Indian trails dating back to the 1800s, procured from the Wisconsin Historical Society, now graces the back of the sign serving as a captivating educational display for visitors. A short trail has been groomed through the woods along which four striking pieces of metal art, designed and crafted by talented students from Union Grove High School, have been installed. These artistic creations serve a dual purpose: enhancing the park’s aesthetic appeal and engaging younger visitors through an interactive “I-Spy” game.

In addition, the east end of the park now boasts new swings, three additional play pieces, new calisthenics equipment (built by Bower Design and Construction), and two new benches (designed, constructed, and installed by Union Grove High School students).
